CUBE EfficiencyUnit: energy management system for battery storage and your site

One system controls grid supply, battery storage, PV system, charging infrastructure and heating. In real time and fully automatically.

The CUBE EfficiencyUnit is the energy management system (EMS) from CUBE CONCEPTS. It continuously analyses electricity market prices, weather data and consumption forecasts and uses them to control all energy sources and consumers at a site. In the battery storage system, it coordinates peak shaving, atypical grid usage under §19 StromNEV and trading on the balancing energy and spot markets, without intervening in PLCs, control systems or production control.

How it works

How the CUBE EfficiencyUnit works

The calculations run in the cloud, while an on-site controller handles control. Both are permanently connected.

Data cloud: calculate and optimise

Internal consumption data and external data such as current electricity market prices and weather data, including forecasts, flow continuously into a cloud environment. There they are calculated and analysed live. You can see all key factors of your energy supply at any time and adjust parameters individually.

On-site controller: control

The controller at your company is connected to the cloud server. It processes the data it receives and controls the connected systems in real time: battery storage, charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, heating system and other electricity consumers.

Basic principle: The CUBE EfficiencyUnit always uses the cheapest energy source and dynamically adjusts grid supply to the current supply situation. No manual intervention is needed.

Control

What the CUBE EfficiencyUnit controls

As the central control unit, it integrates all key components of a site's energy infrastructure.

01
Grid supply and transformers

Grid supply optimised in real time according to current electricity market prices, with a direct connection to the German electricity market

02
Battery storage

Peak shaving, load shifting, balancing energy and spot market from a single control system

03
Photovoltaics

Self-consumption maximised based on weather data, consumption and forecasts

04
Charging infrastructure

Charging currents for the company EV fleet optimised

05
Heating systems

Energy sources for all heating systems controlled automatically

06
Monitoring and reporting

Live monitoring, data analysis and ongoing profitability analysis with a reporting function

Battery storage

The CUBE EfficiencyUnit in battery storage

Balancing energy, §19 compliance and arbitrage compete for the same storage capacity every day. The CUBE EfficiencyUnit prioritises automatically, without manual intervention.

1
Peak shaving and load shifting

The CUBE EfficiencyUnit coordinates both fully automatically. §19 compliance always takes priority over trading on the electricity market.

2
Peak-load time windows and verification

It knows all of the grid operator's peak-load time windows and automatically blocks charging during them. Every charging process is logged with a time stamp, and the annual verification for the grid operator can be exported directly.

3
Balancing energy and spot market

It reweights FCR, aFRR, mFRR and arbitrage every day, based on market prices, peak-load time windows and your load forecast. If a revenue channel drops out, it automatically optimises for the remaining ones.

4
Profitable cycles only

It calculates the cycle threshold dynamically and only runs a cycle if the price spread exceeds the pro-rata costs of degradation and operation.

5
AgNes from 2029

It keeps grid supply below the capacity booked each year, without new hardware and without a new contract.

6
Operational safety

It monitors the operating data continuously. The BMS monitors cells and modules, while the CUBE EfficiencyUnit, as the EMS, coordinates all sources and consumers on site.

With BESS Contracting the CUBE EfficiencyUnit handles trading, monitoring and operation. With a BESS purchase it can be booked as an O&M service on request, and all revenues remain with you.

Frequently asked questions

CUBE EfficiencyUnit: answers for decision-makers

What is the CUBE EfficiencyUnit?+
The CUBE EfficiencyUnit is the energy management system (EMS) from CUBE CONCEPTS. It controls a site's grid supply, battery storage, PV system, charging infrastructure and heating systems in real time and fully automatically, based on electricity market prices, weather data and consumption forecasts.
What is the difference between an EMS and a BMS?+
The BMS (battery management system) monitors the cells and modules of a battery storage system at cell level: voltage, current, temperature. The EMS, which at CUBE CONCEPTS is the CUBE EfficiencyUnit, coordinates all sources and consumers on site and controls operation across all use cases.
Can a battery storage system use §19 and balancing energy at the same time?+
Yes, provided the control is §19-compliant. The CUBE EfficiencyUnit maintains the state of charge of around 50 % required for FCR and automatically blocks charging during peak-load time windows. Both revenue streams run simultaneously, without manual intervention.
Does the battery storage system require intervention in my production control?+
No. The CUBE EfficiencyUnit controls the battery storage system without intervening in PLCs, control systems or production control. Monitoring runs around the clock.
How is §19 compliance verified?+
The CUBE EfficiencyUnit logs every charging process and every period relevant to the peak-load time windows with a time stamp. The annual verification for the grid operator can be exported directly and is archived in an audit-proof manner. The deadline is 30 June of the following year.
Is the CUBE EfficiencyUnit ready for AgNes?+
Yes. According to the Bundesnetzagentur's AgNes draft, industrial customers will pay a capacity price on capacity booked annually from 2029. The CUBE EfficiencyUnit keeps grid supply below this capacity, without new hardware and without a new contract.
