DIN EN, VDE & IEC specifications for commercial PV roof systems

When installing a photovoltaic system on commercial and industrial roofs, various DIN EN, VDE & IEC specifications must be observed. The DIN EN series of standards as specifications for PV roof systems

DIN EN stands for "Deutsche Industrienorm Europäische Norm" and is a series of standards that have been harmonized throughout Europe and are therefore valid in many European countries. The series of standards contains technical standards that describe the requirements for products, processes and services. The German Institute for Standardization e.V. (DIN) has also developed specifications for the installation of PV systems, among other things.

The VDE rules and regulations

The VDE Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies has also drawn up regulations and technical rules for commercial photovoltaic systems. Worth mentioning are, for example: VDE-AR-N 4105, which regulates the connection of PV systems to the low-voltage grid, VDE 0100-712, which regulates roof installation and cable routing within the building, or VDE 0126-1-1, which describes the requirements for protective measures against overcurrent, overvoltage, earth faults and other safety aspects. In general, it should be noted that there may be different regulations depending on the federal state and type of system.

IEC specifications for PV roof systems

The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is an international organization that sets standards for electrical engineering and electronics. There are also various IEC standards that are relevant for photovoltaic systems. Some of these include IEC 61724 for monitoring the performance of photovoltaic systems, which specifies the requirements for monitoring the performance of photovoltaic systems, IEC 61829 for determining the electrical behavior of PV modules under natural sunlight or IEC 62446, which specifies the minimum requirements for design documentation, commissioning tests and inspections of grid-connected PV systems.
