Subsidy program for battery storage & fast charging points

Effective immediately, the federal government will support commercial businesses in expanding fast-charging technology with 50 kW and above, as well as in the installation of stationary battery storage systems. The program promotes investments in sustainable mobility and sector coupling with up to 5 million euros per project to advance the operational energy transition.

Since June 6, 2024, the "National Charging Infrastructure Control Center" of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport has been operating a Germany-wide Subsidy program for battery storage & fast charging points initiated.

Eligible applicants and differentiation

Companies in the commercial sector, municipal companies, sole traders and freelancers with a registered office in Germany are eligible to apply. A distinction is made between SMES (with a minimum of 9 and a maximum of 249 employees and a maximum annual turnover of 50 million euros) and GU (large companies).

Eligible battery storage systems, fast charging points and connections

Funding is available for the purchase and installation of stationary Battery buffer storage and from new Fast charging points with a Nominal charging capacity from 50 kW. This also includes the necessary grid connections, the design of which can be adapted for the integration of PV systems, as well as civil engineering work and energy and charging management systems. However, third-party planning services, own work and leasing and rental expenses are excluded.

Grants in the funding program for battery storage & fast charging points

Any company can submit an application and the grants are limited to Limited to 5 million euros. The funding is provided as a grant with partial financing: SMEs with 40 % and GU with 20 %. The eligible expenditure per charging point is limited to a maximum amount that depends on the maximum charging capacity of this charging point. Charging points from 50 to 149 kW for SMEs are subsidized with max. 14,000 euros and for GUs with max. 7,000 euros subsidized. Larger charging points of more than 150 kW are subsidized with a maximum of 30.000 resp. 15,000 euros subsidized.

Conditions and implementation period of the funding program

The fast-charging points and battery storage systems must be installed in Germany and remain in the applicant's possession for at least two years. In addition, the electricity must come from renewable energy sources and it may only a promotion for the entire project. The company has 18 months to implement the measures after receiving the positive funding decision.

Conclusion on the funding program for battery storage & fast charging points

The funding program for fast-charging points and battery storage systems offers a very good opportunity for companies to invest in sustainable and future-oriented technologies. The financial support can significantly reduce the high initial costs. Companies should take advantage of this opportunity to Charging infrastructure or expand their energy costs with Battery storage to reduce energy consumption. In both cases, you are making an important contribution to the energy transition.
